History of  Garbarakshambigai Amman temple: garbarakshambikai amman temple

The couple Nidhruva and vedikai was childless. They visited ‘MULLAIVANAM’ and saw two sages Gowthama and Gargeya , the sages advised them to pray Garbarakshambigai. The couples rendered services to the sage in mullaivanam. The couple worshipped the goddess and vedikai got conceived. Nidhruva was away from home at that time, a sage named Urdhuvapada asked Vedikai to render service for him but Vedikai was in a faint state due to the strain in pregnancy .She didn’t responded to the sage so the sage got angry and cursed her without knowing that she was pregnant.due to the curse her fetus got disintegrated and descended.Vedikai started crying and prayed to the Goddess parvathi devi. The Goddess appeared and protected her fetus in a sacred pot untill it developed into a male child and returned the kid to the couples. The couple named the kid as ‘Naidhuruvan’. Vedikai requested Goddess parvathi to remain in Mullaivanam and protect all the women and their foetus as the Goddess did for her.The Goddess accepted her wish and stayed in mullaivanam as Garbharakshambigai – savior of foetus .so it is believed that if childless couples and miscarriage women offers prayer with faith they will be blessed with child. Vedikai had no milk to feed her child Naidhuruvan .she prayed to Goddess and parvathidevi sent ‘Kamadhenu’ the divine cow to mullaivanam to feed the child.when the hoily cow scratched the earth with her hoof, milk came out in plenty from the ground. This milk tank exists even now in the name of ‘Ksheerakundam’.

God Mullaivananathar: The Lingam in Mullaivanam is self maintained(swayambu). The Lingam is made up of ant hill mud.Hence abhishekam is not performed for the main deity.During valarpirai pradhosham the linga is pasted with ‘punuhu’.This Punuhu is believed to have healing power for incurable disease like skin, cardiac.Mullaivananathar is worshipped for better health.People affected with incurable disease can offer ‘punuhu chattam’ to the Lord.
